Penny Hydraulics Support Zumbathon for Tommy's Charity
The event, held during baby loss awareness week was dedicated to one of Laura’s regular pupils Catherine who tragically gave birth to her stillborn daughter in 2011.
“We wanted to help raise awareness of baby loss and how it affects families around the UK. No-one should have to endure baby loss on their own. By arranging the Zumbathon we have managed to bring together over 30 people, raise awareness of baby loss and raise over £1000 for charity”
- Laura Davies
The ladies including Penny Hydraulics team members Claire Milnes and Charlotte Horne danced Zumba for over 90 minutes, enjoying a well-deserved drink following the event.
Marketing Manager Dan Casey is proud to be part of a company with colleagues who give back to the community.
“What Laura and her team have achieved is absolutely fantastic! Penny Hydraulics were proud to support Laura and such a worthy cause by donating some raffle prizes. I’m really honoured to be part of a team that gives back to the community and we look forward to being involved in the next event!”
The statistics Surrounding Baby Loss:
In the UK, 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth.
In 2016, there were 3,430 stillbirths in the UK. This means that 1 in every 225 births ended in a stillbirth. That's 9 babies every day.
In the UK, around 60,000 babies are born prematurely each year. The rate of preterm birth is between 7- 8% across the UK.
Miscarriage is more common than people realise. Up to 1 in 4 women will experience a miscarriage in their lifetime. Many miscarriages are unreported and some go unnoticed as it happens so soon. Among women who know they are pregnant, it is estimated that 1 in 6 pregnancies end in miscarriage.
Tommy's is a medical research charity determined to end the heartache caused by premature birth, miscarriage and stillbirth. The charity funds a national programme of research, education and information aimed at understanding and preventing these tragedies. Since the charity was founded in 1992, Tommy's has funded more than 60 research projects and established centres for research in London and Manchester.
Their new campaign is also so vitally important ‘Together for Change’
There is still silence and shame around baby loss. But if we can talk about it openly and honestly, not only can we help each other feel less alone, but we can also pave the way for greater awareness and more research to stop it happening.
