Director of the company, Matt Magee contacted Penny Hydraulics Area Sales Manager Steve Brackstone in April 2015. Mr Magee already had a Penny Hydraulics hydraulic crane fitted to one of his vehicles to stop employees having to manually handle pumps on and off the vehicle, but it was now quite old. He was due to accept delivery of a new Ford Transit Dropside and was wondering whether to have his old crane refurbished, or to buy a new crane.
Having accessed all his options, Mr Magee decided to opt for a hydraulic pickup crane from Penny Hydraulics new crane range, PH Maxilift Cranes. The best model to suit his needs was the PH150.2 which lifts 480kg at just over 3 metres 700kg at 2.08 metres and 1300kg at 1.16 metres. This was ideal, giving both the reach and capacity for lifting pumps on and off the pickup bed.
The crane is incredibly lightweight at just 175kg and both boom extensions were hydraulically powered, controlled via fixed proportional controls situated at ground level. This setup had two major draws; full hydraulic operation enables extremely precise and controlled lifting and lowering of the pumps and equipment and the fact that this operation is done via controls at ground level means that no unnecessary and potentially unsafe working from height (on the bed of the vehicle) was required.
Simple to use crane manual stabiliser legs were specified which are really lightweight and simple to use. One leg is to be installed on each side of the vehicle to help stabilise the vehicle when the hydraulic crane is in use. The stabiliser legs are adjustable and can be very quickly deployed. A manual wind-up handle allow the operator to extend and retract the leg as and when required. Furthermore, the leg is galvanised making it durable and hard-wearing.
The pickup crane comes with 12 months parts and labour warranty as standard and London Pumps know that they have the benefit of Penny Hydraulics nationwide network of service engineers stocking OEM parts should any issues arise so down-time will always be kept to a minimum.
The PH150 hydraulic crane is currently being installed on the 3.5 tonne commercial vehicle and is due to be completed in the next few days. We are sure that Mr Magee will be happy with the new PH Maxilift crane and that it will be of great use to him and the London Pumps team.
