Penny Hydraulics has partnered with major global retailer GHM! to supply Goods Lifts at their new premises across the UK at sites including Manchester, Leeds, Hinckley and Sheffield.

Former Asda boss Andy Bond is upping his assault on the UK’s discounter market with the opening of GHM! stores. GHM! has the benefit of being backed by the large South African retail group, Pepkor. The group was established in 1965 and now employs over 32,000 people in 3,800 stores across Europe, Africa, and Australasia. The company who state their aim as “helping families replenish everything they need to run their homes, including top brands at a good price helping them to save both time and money”, stock everything from kitchen cupboard fillers, to bathroom cabinet essentials, quick fix home essentials and Pep&Co clothing.

The majority of GHM! Stores have mezzanine floors installed to maximise useable space within the premises for holding stock. Moving goods between floors when accepting deliveries needed to be done quickly and safely to ensure a smooth running business operation.

Having researched Goods Lift manufacturers in the UK, GHM! chose Penny Hydraulics. One of the key reasons being that Penny Hydraulics mezzanine floor lifts are manufactured in the UK allowing both standard and bespoke designs to be installed within short lead times, this was essential to GHM! who needed the lifts to be installed quickly to tie in with other contractors involved in their extensive shop fitting work. Penny Hydraulics comprehensive project management was also a big draw. Project management from site assessment through the design, manufacture and installation phases of the project, including whole life maintenance meant that GHM! had peace of mind that the project would run smoothly from start to end.

Following consultation with one of Penny Hydraulics specialist in-house engineers, the MezzPro lift was specified as the right lift for the task in hand. The MezzPro is a goods lift which enables users to move goods such as trolleys or pallets safely and efficiently to a second floor within buildings.

The GHM! specification lifts have a maximum working load of 500kg and an opposed mast for minimum platform deflection. It was essential that the lift worked quickly so that deliveries could be handled efficiently, so the lift was designed to work at a speed of 0.15 metres per second. The platform was supplied as a standard size at 1300mm x 1300mm and was built with a travel height of just under 6 metres to work between ground level and the mezzanine floor.

The lifts were supplied with electrically interlocked 2000mm high double gates for optimum safety. Further safety features incorporated into the design include an emergency stop button fitted at all control stations, an anti-slip platform surface and hose burst protection. At one site, interlocks were also added to the shops fire doors to ensure an adequate fire rating as dictated by the specific site requirements. All lifts are CE marked and built in conformance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, Lifting Operations& Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and The Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

Since all the lifts were floor mounted and self-supporting, this meant that no structural changes to the buildings were required such as lift pits, making installation quick and simple. A fixed ramp was included in the design to allow trolleys to be easily rolled on and off the platform.

The lifts were all manufactured within a 6 week lead time and GHM! took advantage of Penny Hydraulics rapid installation service, operator training and planned maintenance programmes which ensures that the lifts are kept Thoroughly Examined at regular intervals in accordance with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER).

Penny Hydraulics have now installed 4 goods lifts with further installations in the pipeline at different sites throughout the UK. The repeat business is testament to both excellent customer service and a high quality product. GHM! look to see benefits through both increased productivity and employee safety.
