Design Engineer James Fisher has been up to great things since graduating from Sheffield Hallam in 2015. James achieved a 1st Class Hons Degree in Product Design and took up a full-time post with us straight from Uni. An exhibition of his work will be showed in the Sheaf Exhibition Space in the Hertha Ayrton STEM Centre, between 22.03.18 and 11.04.18

​In 1907, a 24-year-old Howard Burditt founded a business fabricating wicker and wooden boxes, which were used to transport products on the railway. Starting out in two rented rooms in his former employer’s premises, Mr Burditt founded the business after saving 50 shillings and using £100 borrowed from family. Since then Rigid Containers has come a long way – success which is somewhat remarkable considering Mr Burditt and many of his staff served in both World Wars.

Let there be light! NEW counterbalance chandelier winch system lights up Manchester Cathedral

Two leading British manufacturers have united to complete a historical lighting project at Manchester Cathedral. Lighting manufacturer Great British Lighting and lighting winch specialists Penny Hydraulics Ltd partnered to install two bespoke candelabras and an accompanying counterbalance system which enables the luminaires to be lifted and lowered quickly and simply for regular maintenance. The chandelier counterbalance system supplied by Penny Hydraulics Ltd is the first of its kind to be designed and manufactured in the UK.

Novel lifting: New CellarLift installed at the Novello Theatre

The landmark Novello Theatre building in London’s West End was originally opened in 1905 as the Waldorf Theatre. Since then, the building was renamed multiple times, as the ‘Strand Theatre’ in 1909 and the ‘Whitney Theatre’ in 1911. It was only in¬¬ 2005 that the venue was given its current name - the theatre is named after the famous composer and actor Ivor Novello who lived in one of the flats above the theatre during his heyday.
