Leeds Town Hall is a historic building at the heart of Leeds City Centre, originally built in 1858 as a multi-use, council run space.
The age of this building meant the maintenance and cleaning of the 600kg chandeliers had to be hand-operated by a 3-man team using an outdated lighting system. The costly annual cleaning could take up to four weeks, leaving the popular Victoria Hall unusable during this time.
The team at Leeds Town Hall needed a safer and quicker way to carry out the maintenance of their chandeliers.
Not only did the hand-cranking system pose a safety threat to the team carrying out the work, but there was no protection in place for the chandelier itself, meaning it was susceptible to human error. As the chandeliers are rooted in the history of the building and very expensive to replace, it was essential to have an automatic stop system to prevent damage.
The key challenge faced during this project was protecting the beautiful interiors of Victoria Hall. As a historic building, it was crucial to keep the installation neat without obscuring the ornate décor.
Leeds Town Hall is an extremely popular venue and is used all year round for various events. To ensure disruption was kept to a minimum, we had to complete the installation as efficiently as possible.
To solve their issues, we installed Chandelier Winch Systems with automatic stop mechanisms on seven chandeliers to improve safety during maintenance.
The new system also cuts the annual cleaning and maintenance time down to just one week. A more efficient maintenance routine has allowed Leeds Town Hall to boost its productivity and free up more time for the venues to be used.
The entire project took just 3 months from concept to completion, including operational training once the winches had been installed. This allowed the team at Leeds Town Hall to fully operate the systems independently.
“ “The aftercare services that Penny Hydraulics offer is excellent, they’re only a phone call away to give you peace of mind. I am very satisfied with the service Penny supplied with these winches; I have no hesitation recommending them to anyone else thinking of using them.”Simon Stockton, Operations Manager
